Track: Weird Girl
A song written for my historical fantasy/horror series - The Shadowmancer Chronicles.
I wrote this song to get at the emotional crux of the relationship between Mattie and Sarah in The Call of Mammitum. I needed to develop a tighter bond for Sarah in draft 2 other than simple curiosity, and she became an avatar for the social difficulties my oldest autistic daughter experienced around puberty as well as my own general and similar failures at maintaining friendships. This song became the scene linked below, which is the resolution scene for the sequence where Mattie accepts the most important friendship she will have in this series. Mattie and Sarah are my Kirk and Spock. It demanded a ukulele and none of the newer Suno models have generated it better than this.

[instrumental intro] [verse] When we were little girls I saw you sitting alone at school on the stoop, with your hands out in the air But you were happy, said you were fishin' And you invited me to join I thought it was silly but I sat and you gave me a rod You told me all about fishin' with your dad and then you caught one, it was a big one. Now, I don't like to pretend I never liked that kind of play But I helped you reel it in anyway You made it so much fun, without any expectations and I thought that's all we needed to be friends [chorus] I'm just a weird girl A strange, unusual girl I talk and no one listens. They just laugh or turn away. They call me the weird girl the strange, unusual girl I wish it was as easy as fishin' on the stoop with you. Because I'm a weird girl I'm a strange, unusual girl I'm sorry I didn't know how to be your friend. [verse 2] But one day you were sad And they said your daddy died And they told me just to leave you be I didn't understand, I didn't know what else to do And I never saw you fishin' there again Then girls they become young women and all the rules they change but I didn't change I don't understand the rules So they called me rude, they even called me strange I was the weird girl And there's no one I could talk to So I stopped talking I turned myself to stone [chorus] I'm just a weird girl A strange, unusual girl I talk and no one listens they just laugh or turn away. They call me the weird girl the strange, unusual girl I wish it was as easy as fishin' on the stoop with you. Because I'm a weird girl I'm a strange, unusual girl I'm sorry I didn't know how to be your friend. [outro] Now we're both weird girls We're strange, unusual girls But I talk and you don't listen. You don't remember. You just run away. To you I'm a mean girl A harsh, judgemental girl And I just miss sitting there fishin' in the air with you. [end]
